Asheboro Artists Haven

This past year, NC A&T graduate Dean Matthews has been updating and renovating a house located at 613 Douglas Street in Greensboro. The house, named the Asheboro Artists Haven, is envisioned as a home to artists or other creatives. It can be an innovative and unique space for artists and arts education. The goal for the Asheboro Artists Haven is to cultivate an environment where artists can craft their experiences as freely as they wish. We want the resident artists to encourage community engagement, improve relations within the Ole Asheboro and East Greensboro communities, and support inventive citizenship through classes, artists-in-residence programs, exhibitions, performances, and public art engagements.

Selected artists must maintain the historic property inside and outside, ensuring no barriers to a thriving artistic process. This immersive space serves both emerging and professional artists and fosters productivity and development within originality and creativity.

Dean has partnered with ArtsGreensboro to help find the right artists to fill the rooms and activate the house, in and out. The house has a grand entry, with a sitting room, family room, and dining area. It has five bedrooms, two and a half baths, a full kitchen, and laundry. The wrap-around porch overlooks Douglas Park, and the fenced-in back yard is large with a canopy of trees. The house sits on over a quarter acre.

Rental Fee and Lease Terms

The rental fee is $2,000 per month plus utilities. The right person or persons for the Asheboro Artists Haven will be committed to community engagement and creative activation. They must also be in a position to afford the rental payments. We’ll have month-to-month agreements with a minimum of a 1-year commitment. We will consider an individual or group of artists as possible renters.

Open House

August 14, 10:30 – 1:30 PM, Dean Matthews, owner and creator of the Asheboro Artists Haven, will host an open house and discussion session. Interested artists and creatives are invited to tour the house, meet neighbors, walk around the neighborhood to envision being a part of the neighborhood. After that, if you are interested, Mr. Matthews asks that you write a brief letter stating your vision of how you can activate the house and build community in this historic neighborhood in Greensboro. All applicants must be creditworthy and have references, and abide by the terms of the lease.
