AWARDS

Acquisition Award: $1,000
First Place: $300
Second Place: $200
Third Place: $100

ELIGIBILITY

Open to all US artists 18 years of age or older working in ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, paper, or any combination of craft medias. Work must be original (no kits), completed in the past two years, and not previously exhibited at the Arts Center. Entry to this exhibit establishes an agreement on the part of the artist to exhibit selected works under all conditions listed in the prospectus. Substitutions for accepted works are not allowed. NO ENTRY FEE

ACQUISITION AWARD RESTRICTIONS

The work selected for the Acquisition Award will become part of the Arts Center’s Permanent Collection. Any artist who will not accept the $1,000 purchase award for any submission must indicate this on their submission entry. Not For Sale (NFS) will automatically be considered ineligible.

LIABILITY

Accepted Entries will be insured by the City of Rocky Mount from receipt through May 31, 2023, for 60% of the retail price. Please note in the instance of a claim, artists will be held responsible for adequate proof of value before compensation is provided. Works designated as NFS must have a stated insurance value and will be held to the same burden of proof if a claim is reported. Works remaining past May 31,2023 will no longer be insured, may become the property of the Arts Center, and may be disposed of or accessioned.

JUROR

Susan Fecho is Dean of the School of Visual, Performing, and Communication Arts at Barton College, NC. Her lifelong devotion to art includes over 30 years of teaching and working with art students in the United States and abroad. Fecho
is a multi-media printmaker/surface designer with an earned M.F.A. from East Carolina University. In addition, she has pursued postgraduate studies at various institutions including Jan Van Eyck Academie, Humboldt Field Research Institute,
Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Northern Illinois University, and Penland School of Crafts. She has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally and has received numerous awards, grants, and residencies. Fecho’s published images have been accepted into several major collections: the Smithsonian Institution’s American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery Library, Washington, D.C.; the Word and Image Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; and the Museum of Women Artists, Washington, D.C.

JUDGING

Artworks accepted in preliminary judging by digital image do not constitute acceptance into Handcrafted. If upon delivery, an accepted artwork is found to have been misrepresented by the image sent or deemed unfit or unsafe for exhibition, it may be disqualified. Award winners will be selected by the juror after the exhibition is installed and announced at the Artist Reception.

ENTRY PROCEDURES

Up to four (4) pieces may be entered. Works should be submitted by email (please see instructions attached to this prospectus for full details) for preliminary judging. Each artwork may be represented by up to three (3) separate images showing details or different views of the work. The entry submitted via email to mvhartscentersubmissions@gmail.com must correspond to images by entry number. Images of works accepted will be retained by the Arts Center for its permanent records and publicity purposes. Digital images must be in JPG format and may be sent by email or by CD. File sizes should not exceed 1 MB. Each file must be identified by artist name, entry number, and title. Artist names should not be embedded in the image. CDs must be identified with the artist’s name and list of artworks as corresponds to the entry form. PowerPoint formatted entries will be disqualified.

Entry Materials are due no later than Wednesday, November 30, 11:59 PM (MST).

SALES

The Arts Center will retain a 40% commission on works sold. To receive payment, artists will need to submit a completed W-9 form and contract, which will be forwarded upon sale. Payments will be mailed within 6 weeks after the close of the show.

AWARD RECIPIENTS

Each award recipient that is not already a vendor with the City of Rocky Mount will be asked to complete and turn in a W-9 form and contract to receive payment. The forms will be forwarded to the artist after awards have been determined. Awards will be mailed within 4 weeks after the close of the show.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

All works must be completely dry, framed, wired, ready for hanging, or otherwise suitably prepared for exhibition. No sawtooth hangers accepted. Orientation or installation instructions should be included with work. Works may not exceed 6 feet in any direction.

DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORKS

Accepted works cannot be mailed or otherwise delivered to the Arts Center before a signed Exhibition contract is in place. Exhibit contracts are due no later than January 6, 2023. Accepted works may be shipped or hand-delivered, but must arrive no later than January 13, 2023, to:

Works may also be hand-delivered. If you require assistance moving your piece, you must make an appointment with the Art Curator. Email mvhartscentersubmissions@gmail.com to make arrangements.

The artist is responsible for all shipping and return shipping costs and arrangements to and from the Arts Center. For return, the Arts Center will pack each piece in its original packing materials and containers. Artists are responsible for arranging return shipping to the address of origin through their local UPS/FedEx/USPS or other shipping office at the close of the exhibition. Shipping insurance is the responsibility of the artist. The Arts Center will not accept money for shipping and is not responsible for works lost, stolen, or damaged once picked up by the shipper.

Check your local shipper for prepaid return labels, call tag systems, and printable internet shipping labels. Artists should include the return label with the shipment of the work to the Arts Center or provide the Arts Center with a prepaid label at the close of the exhibition.

Email/Entry Submission Format Instructions

Please use the below guidelines for your email submission to the Juried Art Show. We prefer that you email your entries so that we have them in a timely manner; however, if you need to send through the mail, you still need to follow the same format of giving us the following information:

  1. Send your entries to: MVHArtsCenterSubmissions@gmail.com
  2. The subject line should read: “[Artist Name] Handcrafted 2023”
  3. In the body of the email/mail, please provide:
    1. Artist name (as credit line should read)
      2. Artist mailing address
      3. Artist phone number(s)
      4. Artist email address
      5. Website (if available)
  4. You may submit up to four entries. For each entry, please include in the body of the email/mail:
    1. Entry 1
    2. Title of entry
    3. Medium; materials used
    4. Size (height, width, depth, weight)
    5. Retail price (please account for commission): $___ or NFS
    6. Insurance price (required if the item is not for sale): $___
    7. Eligible for Acquisition Award: YES or NO
  5. Submit images as an email attachment to this document, or submit a CD. For each entry, you may submit up to three images. Name each image’s file with its corresponding Entry Number and Title.

2023 HANDCRAFTED CALENDAR

  • November 30, 2022 – Deadline for Receipt of Entries
    The Maria V. Howard Arts Center will under no circumstances accept any piece of art that does not have a signed contract in place before the work of art is received.
  • December 13, 2023 – Notifications to Artist
    Every artist will receive a notification either by mail or email, regardless if he/she was selected for the show or not.
  • January 6, 2023 Deadline for Receipt of Signed Exhibition Contracts
    The Maria V. Howard Arts Center will under no circumstances accept any piece of art that does not have a signed contract in place before the work of art is received.
  • January 13, 2023 Deadline for Receipt of Accepted Works

    Works may be accessioned into the Permanent Collection, accessioned into the City Hall Collection or it may be disposed of by any methods seen fit.
