Supervisor: Education Coordinator
Position Description
The After-School Program Instructor is a part-time contracted teaching position in the Education Department of the Center for Visual Artists (CVA). After-school instructors are responsible for planning and implementing age-appropriate art lessons for youth (grades K-5) enrolled in our Art in the Afternoon program. They are the primary supervisors in our classrooms and ensure that their students are having fun in a safe and welcoming environment while they explore their creativity, develop problem-solving skills, and expand their cultural awareness.
After-school instructors teach a variety of art media and have opportunities to lead a range of programs based on their experience and arts background including continuing their position into summer programming including art camps, private lessons, etc. Once instructors are established in their position they may also be asked to act as representatives of the organization leading art activities at special community events.
Qualifications
Education: Acquired or actively pursuing full-time a bachelor’s or higher degree in Arts Education, Visual Art, Education, or comparable field-related degree and/or training courses, which may include curriculum training, teaching analysis and evaluation, early childhood development, etc.
Experience: Job-related experience in teaching is preferred, however, we believe that part of our mission as an emerging artist organization is to guide future educators by providing quality teaching experiences. Must have valuable experience working with youth in an organized setting as a lead instructor, assistant, student teacher, volunteer, etc.
Skills Required
- Interest and ability in art and teaching. Must enjoy working with children.
- Effective interpersonal and oral communication skills
- Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community
- Ability to maintain professional and productive relationships with program staff, administration,
parents, and all other parties involved in the production and completion of programming. - Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Strong organization and planning skills
- Dependable, responsible, and on time
- Enthusiasm, patience, and tact
- Problem solving and analytical skills to adjust curriculum to suit student, program, and site needs
- Effective written communication skills to prepare lesson plans, letters to parents, etc. with
accurate grammar and punctuation - Ability to accept supervision, and guidance. Work independently and as a team.
Compensation
The After-school Program Instructor is a part-time position paid hourly. Hourly
compensation ranges from $13 – $15 per hour based on previous experience and the specifications of the curriculum. Instructors are scheduled for 21 hours per week. The schedule is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays. Compensation is made on the last business day of each month and covers the time period from the 26th of the month prior to the 25th of the current month.
