Director of Marketing & Public Relations

Position Type: Full Time with benefits/Exempt
Reporting to: President & CEO
Salary range: $55,000 to $60,000

The Director of Marketing & Public Relations will create, implement, and oversee engaging, innovative, and informational communication initiatives that effectively promote ArtsGreensboro’s mission, strategic objectives, programs, and financial security across multiple platforms. This position will use dynamic marketing and branding strategies to promote actions and impact, ensure a positive public image, and sustain financial resources.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Director of Marketing and Public Relations will possess the experience and skills to:

  • In collaboration with the President/CEO and Director of Development, develop and execute an annual comprehensive, integrated communications plan and manage department budget to support ArtsGreensboro’s mission and organizational goals.
  • Drive donor support and program success for the organization by preparing engaging direct mail, e-newsletters, social media, website, annual report, brochures, other marketing, and collateral material.
  • Manage preparation and distribution of monthly e-newsletters to targeted audiences, including donors, subscribers, community leaders, and other major influencers.
  • Lead the development of new partnerships, co-marketing opportunities, and resource sharing.
  • Serve as the internal and external communications and brand consultant to ensure a consistent organizational message across all media while adhering to ArtsGreensboro’s visual standards.
  • Serve as the head copy editor reviewing and editing written material to improve impact, accuracy, readability, and consistency.
  • Manage national and local media, secure coverage, and work with the President/CEO and Director of Development in building local relationships and partnerships.
  • Work with the Marketing Committee for guidance and expertise in developing effective marketing and promotional strategies and best practices.
  • Responsible for achieving marketing goals and objectives as outlined in an annual communication plan, producing monthly data reports to measure success and drive impact.
  • Direct external communications strategies to achieve the organization’s goals, including building local, statewide, and national awareness about ArtsGreensboro’s work and priority issues and establishing ArtsGreensboro as a thought-leader and community resource.
  • Maintain oversight of communications efforts; identify areas of opportunity and develop and implement new strategies and tools to effectively communicate ArtsGreensboro’s work and impact to a wide range of audiences.
  • Work with President/CEO and Director of Development to build and strengthen relationships with news outlets, reporters, and other media influencers; grow and maintain organization’s media list.
  • Proactively seek media coverage on ArtsGreensboro’s current initiatives; lead the design and management of media events and activities, including interviews, speaking engagements, press releases, and Op-Eds; respond to media inquiries promptly.
  • Support President/CEO, Board members, and other staff in preparation for media interviews, panel discussions, and other public presentations and events; engage in public speaking opportunities as appropriate
  • Work with President/CEO and Director of Development to identify and engage spokespeople with key subject-matter expertise for panel discussions, professional development opportunities, and other online and offline events.
  • Design and draft event materials and/or manage vendors in the design process.
  • Manage the organization’s online presence with the Social Media Coordinator, executing initiatives to grow engagement and support. Oversee e-marketing and other digital communications, monitoring touchpoints and subscriber engagement.
  • Draft and manage organization’s publications, including Annual Reports, newsletters, and fact sheets; assist in distributing materials to key audiences.
  • Regularly create, update, and disseminate multi-media content that uses quantitative data as well as stories and testimonials to capture the impact of ArtsGreensboro’s work.
  • Ensure clear messaging and brand consistency around ArtsGreensboro’s work and priority issues across all platforms, including website, social media, press materials, fundraising materials, and events.
  • Working with the Director of Development, assist with fundraising efforts as needed, including creating solicitation materials, talking points, and other resources, to grow and engage ArtsGreensboro’s supporter base.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in a field related to communications, journalism, or marketing.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of professional experience in media communications, public relations, and/or marketing.
  • Strong writing skills are essential.
  • Excellent attention to detail is required.
  • Basic graphic design skills are preferred.
  • Creative thinking, flexibility, and the ability to pivot quickly are important, as external factors can greatly impact the work and shift priorities.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently are essential.
  • Familiarity with social media best practices and other online communications tools, including CRM platforms, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
ArtsGreensboro seeks an energetic self-starter who will drive and manage the organization’s marketing initiatives to promote action and impact, including branding, messaging, advertising, and public relations.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint essential; familiarity with WordPress a plus.
  • Ability to produce and manage department budget, working with outside vendors in bid process and engagement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of communications and familiarity with development principles.
  • The ability to craft key messages and communicate them to impact targeted audiences, including supporters, the media, and other stakeholders.
  • Fluency with new forms of media and social media in a professional capacity.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills, ability to prioritize, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required.
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable, flexible means of transportation are required.
