Thanks to businesses, foundations, and thousands of arts enthusiasts, ArtsGreensboro financially supports more than 50 arts organizations and projects each year, connects the public to arts and entertainment, and financially supports the area arts scene through grants, marketing support, advocacy for state and local funding, and other important initiatives and services.
ArtsGreensboro advocates for the arts in a variety of ways on both local and state levels. In partnership with the High Point Area Arts Council, we advocate for arts in education, and support from city, county and state support for the arts in our community.
Founded in 1960 by community leaders as Greensboro’s arts council, ArtsGreensboro has invested nearly $22 million as direct financial support into Greensboro’s arts economy through grants. But the organization has always contributed much more than grants alone. Through the years, the arts council saved the historic Carolina Theatre, created Center City’s Cultural Arts Center, produced the exciting City Stage Festival, and as it has for more than 40 years, operates the Sternberger Artists Center with 16 studios on Summit Avenue in the historic Sternberger House.
With an annual budget of approximately $3 million, ArtsGreensboro is a catalyst for innovation to build recognition and support for the arts. Through its Annual Campaign-supported grant programs, the Van Dyke Performance Space and other opportunities including the North Carolina Folk Festival, ArtsGreensboro is driving the health and vitality of our community by supporting arts education, celebrating the diversity of Greensboro, and driving economic impact through excellence in arts programming.
The purpose of ArtsGreensboro is to lead and serve our creative community both as a financial resource and catalyst toward innovation, excellence, and sustainability – in order to harness the transformative power of the arts to educate and inspire, connect people across all cultures to build a stronger community, and make Greensboro a vibrant and healthy place to live and work.
1. ACCESS: Increase community access to the arts to touch the lives of everyone in the community, and ensure rich diversity, sustainability, and growth of arts resources.
2. ECONOMIC VITALITY: Support economic vitality and promote Greensboro as a cultural destination through innovative programming with artistic merit.
3. ARTS EDUCATION: Provide educational experiences for all ages that result in increased knowledge and skills in the arts.
Project Support Grants
Through competitive grant programs, ArtsGreensboro invests in high-quality arts experiences that further its strategic priorities. Project Support Grants are intended to support:
• The creation and/or presentation of programming with high artistic merit—including visual arts, music, dance, theatre, and other performance, instructional and/or creative arts programs or art forms.
• Programs with high artistic merit that demonstrate defined and measurable outcomes, including impact on the community.
• Programs that increase access to the arts, engage the community, and enrich the varied cultural vitality of Greater Greensboro.
• Arts education experiences that inspire and engage students (including life-long learning), enhance curriculum, and result in increased knowledge and skills in the arts.

An organization is eligible to apply for a Project Support Grant if it meets all of the following criteria.
• Has its principal office in the Greater Greensboro region;
• Delivers an arts product or program in the Greater Greensboro region;
• Has existed for at least one year;
• Can demonstrate nonprofit 501(c)3 tax exempt status from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and a current charitable solicitation license from the State of North Carolina. Under certain circumstances, those not meeting this requirement may apply through a nonprofit organization that will serve as a fiscal sponsor. Please contact Chip Berry to discuss your eligibility if applying through a fiscal sponsor.
Grant-making organizations, and entities that receive a majority of their operating budget from a unit of government, or college/university programs are NOT eligible to apply for Mission Support or Project Grants.
ArtsGreensboro will consider only one request from each applicant per grant cycle. Organizations receiving or applying for a Project Support Grant may not apply for Mission Support Grants.
All applicants must confirm their eligibility to apply prior to submitting an application. ArtsGreensboro reserves the right to make a final decision on an organization’s or artist’s eligibility and/or funding.
All Project Support Grant applications will be evaluated based on the extent to which the application addresses the following criteria:
• Demonstrates high artistic merit through program quality and work samples
• Demonstrates evidence of success of prior programs
• Programs are aligned with organization’s mission
• Programs are relevant for the audiences for whom they are intended
• Employs an organizational structure (staffing, volunteers, etc.) appropriate for the size and scope of the organization
• Demonstrates evidence of evaluation and planning
• Demonstrates sound financial management and budgeting
• Employs fundraising and/or earned income strategies appropriate for the size of the organization and the community served
Service to the Community
• Demonstrates an understating of the community being served
• Demonstrates how the project supports one or more of ArtsGreensboro’s Strategic Priorities:
1. Access: Presents programming which increases community access to the arts, touching the lives of everyone in the community and ensuring rich diversity, sustainability, and growth of arts resources.
2. Economic Vitality: Presents programming which supports economic vitality and promotes Greensboro as a cultural destination through innovation and artistic excellence.
3. Arts Education: Presents arts education experiences for all ages that result in increased knowledge and skills in the arts.

Please refer to the Review Criteria as you prepare your narrative and other required documents. All materials should tell the same story and represent your project at its best. During the panel meeting, panelists discuss and rate your application based on how your organization demonstrates that it meets the Review Criteria.
2019 Project Support Grants support arts activities taking place between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.
Financials and Governance
Financial information is an essential part of your application. You must submit the following documents:
• Project Budget
• Year-To-Date Income Statement / Statement of Activities (for the most recent period available)
• Organization’s Financial Information (One of the following):
o Organizations with annual budgets of $500,000 or more must submit a formal independent audit by a CPA, unless waived by ArtsGreensboro
o Organizations with annual budgets between $100,000 and $500,000 must submit a reviewed or compiled financial statement prepared by a CPA
o Organizations with annual budgets below $100,000 must submit year-end financial statements signed by the Treasurer
• IRS tax-exempt determination letter
• List of your current Board of Directors with their affiliations, contact information, and email addresses.
• For artists or arts projects using a fiscal sponsor: please provide a description of your primary supporters and advisors.
• Signed Letters of commitment from key partners, collaborators, artists, etc.
• OPTIONAL: Artist resumes or bios reflecting experience, education, awards, etc.
Some of the panelists may not be familiar with your work. This is why good supporting materials that showcase your project are an essential part of the application. Applicants must provide evidence to demonstrate their ability to deliver a high-quality artistic product. Samples should represent your best work and should be no more than three years old.
Label ALL samples with applicant name, title of work and date of work. Sample guidelines for each artistic medium:
• Visual Artists: Six (6) to ten (10) images (at least 300 dpi). Labels for visual art should also include dimensions and media of work.
• Visual Arts Organizations: Information/flyers/brochures on recent exhibits, programs, collaborations, etc.
• Film/Video: Single video no longer than 10 minutes in duration.
• Dance: Two (2) samples (each sample no longer than 5 minutes)
• Drama: Two (2) samples (each sample no longer than 5 minutes)
• Music: Two (2) samples (each sample no longer than 5 minutes)
• Literature: Two (2) representative writing samples up to 5 pages total. Poets may submit up to 5 poems as long as they do not exceed 5 pages.
• Arts Education projects: Must submit lesson plans and/or other educational materials relating to the project.
• OPTIONAL: Artist resumes or bios reflecting experience, education, awards, etc.
Samples must be provided in digital format. See Application Submission section for instructions.
Applicants are required to contact ArtsGreensboro’s Grants Manager, Chip Berry (email@example.com / 336-480-4714), to verify eligibility to apply, AND to discuss the amount of the potential grant request prior to submitting an application.
Applicants are required to complete and submit all application contents by electronic means through ArtsGreensboro’s online GoSmart grant application portal. The deadline for submission is 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 19, 2018.

When you arrive at ArtsGreensboro’s GoSmart portal, you must create a new account by choosing a username and password. Be sure to select “ORGANIZATION” as your applicant type when you create your new account.
Note: The GoSmart system is used by many other grantmaking organizations. Each organization manages its own individual GoSmart portal, so when you access ArtsGreensboro’s portal for the first time, you will need to create a new account. If you attempt to login with the credentials you use for other GoSmart portals, you will not be able to access ArtsGreensboro’s unique portal.
Staff will review applications for completeness and adherence to these Guidelines. Receipt of grant application will be acknowledged in writing. Applicants will be notified if their application is incomplete and if additional information or corrections are necessary, and they’ll be given a specific deadline in writing to provide any revisions and or other necessary information. Applicants must meet all of these specified deadlines for completing/providing revisions and information or the application will be considered withdrawn.
Follow-up phone appointments, application clarification, meetings, and site visits are common during the review process.
ArtsGreensboro utilizes a peer Grants Review Panel to aid in its decision-making. Grant review panels meet formally as a group and evaluate applications according to the Review Criteria.
Grant Recommendations and Approval
After the staff and panel reviews are completed, recommendations are presented to ArtsGreensboro’s Grants Committee. Following this review, the Grants Committee presents the funding recommendations to the full ArtsGreensboro Board of Directors. The Board meets in mid-January to review the recommendations and reach funding decisions.
All applicants will receive notification by mail or email of their grant award or denial in January or February 2019.
Project Support Grants generally will range between $2,000 and $18,000, depending on size of grant pool, merit of projects and available funding. Total funds granted by ArtsGreensboro will not exceed 50% of the project budget.
Project Support grants may be awarded in full or in part, with contingencies, or declined. Applicants should be prepared to modify their project if their full-funding request is not recommended. If an applicant does not receive full funding, they must submit a revised project and receive approval on the changes based on the funded amount prior to any use or commitment of grant funds.
ArtsGreensboro reserves the right to make a final decision on an organization’s funding.
If awarded a Project Support Grant, recipients must submit a final report within 30 days of project completion or by January 31, 2020, whichever comes first. Failure to submit reports by the specified deadlines may jeopardize current and/or future ArtsGreensboro grants being received by the recipient and may result in requiring repayment of grant funds.
Applicants must effectively track data needed by the ArtsGreensboro to fulfill reporting requirements of ArtsGreensboro funders. Information includes ethnicity of participants, number of seniors, veterans, women, disabled, and students on free and reduced lunch programs. This information will be requested in final reports.
As stakeholders in the outcome of ArtsGreensboro’s community-wide Annual campaign, grant recipients are expected to actively support the campaign in the spirit of partnership.
Grant contracts are prepared and mailed in January or February 2019 to those who have been awarded funding. The contracts must be signed and the grant recipient must meet all reporting requirements before grant funds are disbursed.
All grants are conditional upon ArtsGreensboro meeting annual funding targets.
Funding must be matched dollar-for-dollar in cash by the applicant. Public funds, restricted funds, or in-kind gifts may not be used to match a Project Support Grant.
Funds may not be used for private functions, fundraising events, receptions, food or beverages. Priority is given to the arts experience itself. ArtsGreensboro does not fund expenses associated with endowment-building, capital projects, fundraising, debt reduction, the acquisition of equipment, or training programs.
